This week we released the EdgeWave Secure Browser for iPad, iPhone, Android and Kindle. The browser is a great way to extend web security to tablets and smartphones on and off an organization’s network, and is perfect for students with devices provided by 1:1 programs.
Smartphones and tablets have already become a part of our everyday lives, and it’s no surprise that this extends to teens. According to a recent survey by Piper Jaffray, 34% of teenagers own a tablet computer and 86% of teenagers report they are likely to purchase a smartphone for their next device.
Statistics like these, underscore the incredible growth of mobile device use among K-12 students nationwide. And rather than block their use in the classroom, schools are embracing mobile devices as a valuable learning resource. In just one generation, schools have gone from having a computer lab where children could learn keyboarding, to supplying every student in the school with his or her own tablet.
The 1:1 computer initiative has continued to gain ground since it was first introduced in the mid 2000′s, with more schools adopting 1:1 programs every year.
A recent article in Education Week, discusses the popularity of mobile devices in the classroom and why they have so quickly achieved universal acceptance. The article points out that 1:1 initiatives are especially important in poorer schools where one administrator , “… sees tablets as essential tools in helping to close the achievement gap and bridge the digital divide.”
As the article points out, supplying tablets and laptops or allowing students to bring their own has had a significant positive effect on student learning, especially the fact that they can bring the device home with them. As one superintendent said, “Our students are voracious learners between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Now, we can provide them with the tools and the resources that connect and compel them to keep on learning at home.”
The article also touches on risks involved in 1:1 programs, including lost or damaged devices, with many schools purchasing insurance to cover their investments. But another significant risk is the risk to the students by exposing them to unfiltered online content. The author cites tools that provide some protection but don’t really bridge the gap between the school web security solution, and the mobile device once it leaves the school grounds.
EdgeWave offers Web Security for mobile devices that not only assures safe Internet access at school, but follows the device when the student takes it home whether they connect from their home network, public Wi-Fi or the cellular network. Our solution also covers the most devices including iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches, Android smartphones, Android tablets, all Kindle Fire tablets as well as Windows and Mac laptops.
